The Seletun Consensus 2009

Scientific panel on electromagnetic field health risks: consensus points, recommendations, and rationales. University of Athens, National Committee on Non-Ionizing Radiation - Moscow, The Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden

Summary: In 2009 a scientific panel met in Seletun (Norway) for three days of intensive discussion on existing scientific evidence and public health implications from global exposures to artificial electromagnetic fields (EMF). The Scientific Panel recognized that the body of evidence on EMF requires a new approach to the protection of public health and pushes for strong preventative actions.

Conclusions:

ICNIRP public safety limits are inadequate and obsolete with respect to prolonged, low-intensity exposures.

It is strongly recommended that children, pregnant women and the sick do not use mobile or cordless phones. Sensitive populations such as the elderly, the ill, immunologically challenged, children and fetuses are particularly vulnerable.

SAR testing is not adequate to predict important biologic issues identified, such as: increased risks for cancer, neurological diseases, damage to immune function and fertility. A body limit of 0.00033 W/kg is recommended.

A 0.1uT / 1 mG exposure distance limit must be set for electrical installations based on findings of risk for leukemia, brain tumours, Alzheimer‘s and DNA strand breaks.

Based on the evidence of 17 scientific studies, we advise on limiting RF exposure to 1.7mW/m2 (800mV/m) and ideally 0.17mW/m2 (250mV/m)

Effects of Global Communication system radio-frequency fields on Well Being and Cognitive Functions

Zwamborn et al, 2003

The TNO Physics and Electronics Laboratory was commissioned Dutch ministries of health, environment, trade and industry to study effects on the human organism of UMTS and GSM mobile transmissions.

In this double-blind study, 72 participants were each exposed to 1000mv/M of RF radiation for 20 minutes and then evaluated on their performance of various tasks and surveyed.

Conclusion: Those exposed to 2100mhz UMTS signals performed significantly worse in tests of reaction time, memory retention and visual selective. Whilst reactions times were also worse in those exposed to 900mhz GSM.

EU Parliament - The physiological and environmental effects of non-ionising electromagnetic radiation (2001)

Dr. Gerard Hyland, University of Warwick and

International Institute of Biophysics, Germany

This Study focused on how living organisms (humans in particular) can be adversely affected by highly coherent EMFs in a way that is not addressed by existing official Safety Guidelines, namely - through the possibility of non-thermal, frequency-specific influences of an informational nature.

Conclusions:

There are health problems connected with some GSM & TV/radio transmitters, contrary to what is often claimed.

A contemporary threat to the health of Society is man-made ‘electrosmog’ - a non-ionising electromagnetic pollution. Furthermore, given the relatively short time which humanity has been exposed to it, we have no evolutionary immunity against any adverse effects it might directly have.

the ICNIRP safety guidelines only consider the magnitude of RF levels to heat the body tissue, the guidelines do not protect against adverse health effects caused primarily through influences that frequency of the fields causes on the human body.

Must increase public awareness of the electromagnetic nature of living organisms and their consequent hypersensitivity to coherent and even very weak electromagnetic signals.

Headaches, sleep disruption, memory impairment and DNA strand breaks are consistent with findings on the effects of GSM phone emitters on the human body.

It is noted that the ICNIRP guidelines (used by the UK government) have been criticized by various scientific studies as having ..."a consistent pattern of bias, major mistakes and deliberate misrepresentations".

In locations where there may be long term RF exposure, citizens should avoid power densities above 100 uW/m2 (195mV/m).

2009 EU Parliament resolution on health concerns associated with electromagnetic fields

Conclusions:

That the non-emergency use of mobile phones by children be strongly discouraged, on account of their increased vulnerability to potential adverse health effects.

Awareness-raising campaigns should familiarise children with the health risks associated with electronic devices and the importance of switching off devices rather than leaving them on stand-by.

Need to impose requirements whereby the transmitting power of wireless devices must be specified and labelled on the device.

Calls on States to recognise persons that suffer from electrohypersensitivity as being disabled so as to grant them adequate protection.

Identifies that insurance companies have comprehensive exclusion clauses for all health risks associated with EMFs.

The Benevento Resolution 2006

The Venice Resolution, 2008

The International Commission for Electromagnetic Safety (ICEMS) held an international conference: “The Precautionary EMF Approach: Rationale, Legislation and Implementation” in the cities of Benevento and Venice, where the resulting recommendations were signed by over 60 experts in this sphere.

Conclusions:

Industry's arguments that low intensity EMF cannot affect biological systems are not in agreement with the current spectrum of scientific opinion.

As an outcome of our research, we are compelled to confirm the existence of non-thermal effects of electromagnetic fields on living matter, which seem to occur at every level of investigation from molecular to epidemiological.

Epidemiological and in vivo as well as in vitro experimental evidence

demonstrates that exposure to some ELF EMF can increase cancer risk in children and induce other health problems in both children and adults.

There is increasing epidemiological evidence indicating an increased brain tumor risk from long term use of mobile phones.

It is recommended that RF masts and high voltage lines are not located near residential areas and that areas of the city are designated wifi free to facilitate access for ES persons.

European Academy for Environmental Medicine (EUROPAEM) – EMF

working group 2016

EuropaEM Guideline for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of EMF-related health problems and illnesses.

Conclusions:

Research shows men using mobiles in their pockets have adversely affected fertility (sperm counts). An increase in miscarriages by women exposed to high EMF was also noted.

It was noted that analysis of people living in close proximity to base stations were considerably more likely to suffer symptoms of anxiety, fatigue, headaches and depression.

Analysis of several peer-reviewed studies into molecular effects induced by even weak RF in living cells included disruption of pathways, increased cellular stress proteins and deficiencies of antioxidants such as glutathionein.

Effects of EMF exposure include elevated formation of peroxynitrite - causing oxidative stress that can be associated with chronic inflammation, and loss of energy, via the reduction of adenosine triphosphate (ATP).

Static and time-varying electromagnetic fields and affect voltage-gated calcium channels (VGCCs) in the body, increasing peroxynitrite - a harmful element for human cells.

The report strongly recommends keeping daytime EMF exposure to below 613mV/m for Tetra, digital radio and TV transmitters and below 200mV/m for mobile/wifi frequencies. Night-time exposure should be kept below 200mV/m in the former case and 62mV/m for the latter.
